Gerald C. Marterer, president and CEO of Arizona Chemical, will retire on Dec. 31, 2008. He will remain on the company’s board of directors.
Cornelis (Kees) Verhaar joined Arizona Chemical on Sept. 1, 2008 as president and CEO. Mr. Verhaar’s experience includes nearly 30 years in executive leadership in the global chemical industry, most recently as executive vice president of Hexion Specialty Chemicals, where he was responsible for running Hexion’s $2.8 billion epoxy and coating resins business. Mr. Verhaar received his master’s in economics from the University of Amsterdam.
Mr. Marterer joined Arizona Chemical in 2002, after 33 years of executive leadership at International Paper. His tenure included leadership of the company’s Industrial Papers and Quality groups. He was also president of IP Asia. During his six years at the helm of Arizona Chemical, Mr. Marterer led the company through a series of transitions, most notably the sale of the company to Rhône Capital in March 2007 and its becoming a stand-alone company.
Mr. Verhaar’s experience in the global chemical industry is vast. Prior to joining Hexion in 2005, he held senior management positions at companies that included Noveon, Inc., where he was senior vice president and general manager, Performance Coatings Group. He also had been vice president and general manager, global textiles at Johnson Polymer, where he was president and COO, and he also served as regional director, Europe. He also served as managing director at DeVoe Coatings and at ESHA Group.
