Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, Inc. (DIC) acquired Eques Coatings B.V., a prominent European manufacturer ofUV-curable coatings and adhesives for optical discs based in Oss, The Netherlands.
Founded as the coatings division of Philips Electronics, Eques became a privately owned company in 1998 as the result of a management buyout by Piet Van Galen. The company’s principal products include UV-curable coatings for CDs, adhesives for DVDs and specialty coatings for televisions, DVD players and other consumer electronics products.
DIC currently commands a 50 percent-plus share of the global market for UV-curable coatings and adhesives for optical discs. In recent years, however, competitors have gained ground and price competition has intensified. The company’s decision to acquire Eques Coatings reflects its determination to establish production capabilities worldwide, improving customer satisfaction and reinforcing its ability to offer competitive prices.
With the acquisition of Eques Coatings, DIC now has production facilities in Japan, U.S. and The Netherlands. By bringing together Eques Coatings, which is particularly strong in coatings, and DIC, whose forte is adhesives, this move will also strengthen the DIC Group’s product lineup. For the foreseeable future, DIC and Eques Coatings will continue to manufacture and sell their products under their respective brand names. Going forward, the companies will strive to maximize synergies as members of the DIC Group by revamping product mixes to eliminate duplication, as well as by modifying and integrating sales channels and centralizing purchasing of raw materials.
Through these and other measures, the DIC Group will aim to secure a global market share of 60 percent.
