Akzo Nobel Inks (ANI) has signed an agreement to acquire the entire share capital of Trenal S.A., a leading independent supplier specializing in web coldset news and heatset inks. The former shareholders will remain a shareholder of the new group.
Based in Lessines, Belgium, Trenal was established in 1932 and has subsidiaries in a number of countries in and around Europe. Trenal has one of the most modern web inks manufacturing facilities in Europe.
The combination of Trenal and ANI will create a web coldset business that is one of the top three in Europe and also enable ANI to enter the large heatset inks market. The combined company will have in particular strong market positions in the Nordic countries and Benelux.
Following the acquisition, it is planned that Trenal and ANI will continue to operate under their respective brands and all present customer activities will continue. In all other functions it will be looked to the best of both companies and combining functions as appropriate to create a world-recognized web inks company.
“This acquisition is the first step in a growth plan developed after the management buy-out at the end of 2001, a plan that cannot be achieved only by organic growth,” said Peter Koivula, president and CEO of Akzo Nobel Inks. “We look forward with great expectations to this exciting new development for our company. We are convinced that this combination of leading ink suppliers will create not only a company that can service the ever more demanding expectations of our customers, but also create a more international business that will continue to prosper and grow.”
“We are very happy that with this alliance, we have found a partner with the same approach to the market as Trenal always has been working with, i.e. leader in technology backed up with a very strong local service,” said Erwin de Keyser, managing director of Trenal.
The transaction is expected to be finalized by the end of May. All Trenal employees worldwide will continue to further support the business.
Akzo Nobel Inks employs some 860 people worldwide and had a consolidated sale for 2002 of E194 million. Trenal employs some 100 people worldwide and had a consolidated sale for 2002 of E42 million.
