Color Ink, a family-owned commercial printer established in 1984, recently added a SpyderX, a production-class UV digital inkjet press for sheetfed and roll-fed substrates.
“The SpyderX is one of the best values for a mid-range flatbed printer,” said Todd Meissner, president at the Sussex, WI-based company. “It’s a workhorse.”
Designed and manufactured by Inca Digital, the SpyderX, distributed exclusively in North America by Fujifilm, allows for the production of a wide variety of high-quality output. Utilizing Fujifilm Uvijet XS ink, developed specifically for the SpyderX, it delivers production up to 2,476 square feet per hour (230 square meters per hour) with pinpoint accuracy.
The 126” (3.2 m) wide, six-color plus white SpyderX is available as either a flatbed or a combination flatbed/roll system model, for handling rigid and flexible substrates, including PVC sheets, foam board, corrugated, polystyrene, window cling, wallpaper and banner material.
“Previously we’ve had to turn down work, and now we are able to turn jobs quicker with the additional capacity of the SpyderX,” Meissner said.
“We are running three shifts, five days a week. We also run weekends as needed,” added Austin Meissner, sales and sourcing manager at Color Ink. “The uptime is impressive.”
The SpyderX is capable of producing a wide range of output from menu boards to banners to backlit signs and permanent indoor displays.
“We use a variety of substrates, rigid and flexible, and having the assurance that the vacuum bed is going to hold the substrate down, without a lot of thought, is very important,” Todd Meissner said.
“We looked at other hybrid options, and with regard to holding down the sheets, the vacuum performance on the SpyderX is great,” added Austin.
SpyderX features light inks (Light Cyan and Light Magenta) in the standard channel configuration.
“The adhesion with the Uvijet XS ink system is very good. With some of our other presses we’ve had problems with poor adhesion,” said Todd. “Comparing the image quality with the others, the SpyderX with Uvijet ink is a standout.”
Increased efficiencies are enhancing the bottom-line at Color Ink, as versatility and speed are key elements within the high-end SpyderX platform.
“We’ve really cut-down on overtime and our labor costs as a whole have decreased dramatically,” Meissner said. “We are able to go from one job to another at a quick pace.”
