The past few years have been difficult ones for the ink industry, leading to companies cutting back on their expenditures. Capital expenditures for equipment is one area that typically suffers during a recession, and the past year and a half have followed that pattern.
For this year’s Milling and Mixing Market report, which begins on page 16, I spoke with executives at a number of leading manufacturers, to get their insights into what is occurring in the ink industry. As expected, these companies reported that 2009 was a difficult and disappointing year, but there was a silver lining that came through, as quite a few of the leaders noted that there was a pick-up in interest at the end of 2009. This corresponds with what ink industry leaders reported in last month’s Year in Review article.
While almost no one expects the ink industry to return to the levels of even a few years ago in the near future, there is some optimism that there might be some improvement in the coming year. That would be some very good news indeed.

As has been the case for the past 14 years, this month’s issue features our annual U.S. Ink Directory, which begins on page 18. The U.S. Ink Directory is the printing ink industry’s only comprehensive listing of companies, addresses, products, personnel and contact information.
In addition, the U.S. Ink Directory can also be found on Ink World’s website, www.inkworldmagazine.com/ink_us/, whichfeatures the most up-to-date information gathered throughout the year, as well as links to the ink companies as well as their websites.
As is the case every year, I am happy to note that there are quite a few new companies that have been added to this year’s U.S. Ink Directory. Unfortunately, there also have been some companies that have closed their doors. In spite of the difficult economic times, it does seem that there are people who are starting up new companies in order to bring their expertise to the printing ink industry.
If you wish to have your company listed in our online directory as well as next year’s listing, please send me an e-mail at dave@rodpub.com. Also, I update the on-line information throughout the year; please send me an e-mail or give me a callif you wish to send in changes.
