Last year, Drupa held center stage for the graphic arts industry, as more than 400,000 attendees traveled to Dusseldorf, Germany to see first-hand some of the new concepts that were being presented to the printing industry. Indeed, the digital revolution in the printing community had become extremely clear at Drupa.
This year, the most important graphic arts exposition will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, as Print 01 starts an eight-day run from Sept. 6-13.
Print 01 will take up the vast majority of McCormick Place, and is expected to further emphasize the products first introduced at Drupa.
Print 01 is the largest, most comprehensive trade show held in the world this year for graphic design, digital prepress, printing, publishing, and converting technology. The two largest exhibits will be displayed by Heidelberg and Xerox: Heidelberg alone will have nearly 100,000 square feet of space, while Xerox will have approximately 50,000 square feet.
“Print 01 will be the largest exposition for the graphics communications industry anywhere in the world in 2001,” said Regis J. Delmontagne, president of the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC), Print 01’s organizer. “We are anticipating 850 exhibiting companies, 900,000 square feet of exhibits and 90,000 attendees.”
Print 01 shares an annual rotation with major international expositions throughout the world, including Drupa and IPEX. Print 01 takes the place of Graph Expo and Converting Expo, which the GASC hosts at McCormick Place on years when Print 01 is not being held.
Drupa 2000 offered the printing world the opportunity to see many new technologies, some of which were not yet available for purchase. Mr. Delmontagne said that attendees should expect to see the latest technologies for the graphic arts industries at Print 01.
“The innovations that were in development at Drupa will be on display and working at Print 01,” Mr. Delmontagne said.
As was the case at Drupa, ink manufacturers and suppliers from allied industries are making their presence felt at Print 01, with many key companies planning extensive displays to reach the decision-makers who attend the exhibition.
Among the exhibitors are BASF Printing Systems, Collins Ink Corp., Day-Glo Color Corp., Eckart America L.P., EM Industries, Flint Ink Corporation, Fluid Management, GSE Dispensing, Hostmann Steinberg Printing Inks, Hurst Chemical Corporation, INX International, Kohl & Madden, Lyson Inc., MD-Both Industries, Pantone Inc., Spinks Ink, Sun Chemical Corporation, Van Son Holland Ink, W-R Industries and Zeller + Gmelin.
“Print 01 will be a big show,” said Jim Bishop, manager, marketing services at Sun Chemical Corporation. “Whenever there’s a show at McCormick Place, it has excellent turnout.”
Mr. Bishop said that Sun Chemical will have a major presence at Print 01, as the company presents a number of new products, including Sun Jet ink jet products.
“We’re going to have a 3,000 square foot booth, where we will be exhibiting new innovations, including our new Sun Jet ink jet products from our Coates division,” Mr. Bishop said.
“We’re very excited about the show,” said Kathy Marx, vice president, marketing and strategic planning for Flint Ink Corporation, which will have an 1,800 square foot booth at Print 01. “We have some very exciting announcements, including our major launches such as the Gemini line of hybrid UV inks and our Matrix UV inks. We will also have a press running at our booth with some of our new technologies.”
“We find it is very good for us because of our global presence,” said Joe Bendowski, president of Van Son Holland Ink. “This is an international show, and it brings everybody out. We’ve more than quadrupled our booth space for this year’s show.”
“After Drupa, it’s the largest print show in the world, and it’s certainly the biggest in North America,” said Nick Rink, product manager, graphic arts at MD-Both Industries. “We have some new products that we will be unveiling, including our new sheetfed hybrid inks.”
Mr. Rink said that MD-Both traditionally works with ink companies on metallics, but Print 01 will provide his company with the opportunity to meet printers.
“Print 01 is a good chance for us to get contact with the end-users, and find out why they want to use metallics and what challenges they face,” Mr. Rink said.
Print 01 is sponsored by three leading U.S. graphic arts organizations: the National Association of Printing Leadership (NAPL), NPES The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies, and Printing Industries of America (PIA).
In addition to the exhibits, there will also be a series of seminars examining a wide range of critical printing issues, from the possibilities and challenges of digital printing to the future of the printing industry.
