Regulatory compliance is a challenge for almost every manufacturer, as determining what the government actually requires is not an easy task. When regulations change, there is a certain amount of anxiety that comes along with it.
For ink manufacturers and their suppliers, keeping up with the latest regulations that OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) has issued is one challenge; keeping up with different international standards is even more daunting.
For this reason, OSHA’s 2012 HazCom Standard Requirements was actually a step in the right direction, as it seeks to implement the international Globally Harmonized Standard for HazCom standard SDS and labeling. The system will be put in place by 2015 in the U.S.
To help ink manufacturers and suppliers get ahead on the program, the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM) is hosting a two-part webinar, “Developing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that Meet the OSHA 2012 HazCom Standard Requirements.” Part 1 will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. EST; Part 2 is set for Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, also at 2:00 p.m. EST.
George Fuchs, director - regulatory affairs and technology for NAPIM, said that the two-part webinar is designed for anyone who produces mixtures that may be covered by the OSHA HazCom standard.
“OSHA decided to align its HazCom standard SDS and labeling with the Globally Harmonized System, which is the international standard,” Fuchs said. “By 2015, every company will have to comply with this regulation. The new system will reduce the confusion in labeling around the world, as companies can develop one set of labels and SDSs for any country that has adopted the Globally Harmonized System.”
Denise A. Deeds, Industrial Health & Safety Consultants, will present the webinar, which will provide ink manufacturers and related mixture producers with an understanding of the requirements, resources, skills and methods for developing OSHA/GHS compliant Safety Data Sheets utilizing online resources, raw material supplier information and OSHA guidance.
“Specifically, the webinar will discuss the rules and regulations that apply to the new safety data sheet standard,” Fuchs noted. “The first part will cover the specific rules and requirements. The second part will offer some practical demonstrations for ink manufacturers and suppliers, anyone who produces a mixture.”
