Richard E. Breen, owner and CEO of Central Ink Corpopration, received the Ault Award, the most prestigious honor from the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM), during NAPIM’s 96th annual convention, which was held March 24-27 at Hyatt Grand Champions Resort, Indian Wells, CA.
Mr. Breen’s service in the ink industry began in 1946, when he took on a part-time job at CEB Inks, the ink company founded by his father, Cecil. After completing his education and serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Breen joined CEB Inks full-time in 1954, taking on all facets of the business, from technical and manufacturing to sales and management, and became president in 1985. During his 23 years as president, he has led Central Ink Corporation’s expansion from letterpress and heatset inks into the news, sheetfed and UV markets, and without the help of acquisitions, spurred the company’s sales growth from $6 million when he became president to $60 million in 2011.
“This is kind of like a pat on the back from our industry,” Mr. Breen said.
In addition, 11 industry leaders received NAPIM’s prestigious Printing Ink Pioneer Award during the convention. They include:
• Rod Balmer, technical director paste ink, Flint Group.
• Hixon Boyd, vice president national accounts, Color Resolutions International, LLC.
• Rich Bradley, global market manger printing inks, Lubrizol Advanced Materials.
• Jonathan Ellaby, vice president international operations, INX International Ink Co.
