PRIMIR Conducts Study on Digital Printing
Print Industries Market Information and Research (PRIMIR) has recently begun a new study, Digital Printing Outlook in a Production Environment.
State Street Consultants, Inc. and John M. Hamm and Associates, LLC will jointly conduct this new research effort.
When completed in the fall of 2006, the study will provide a quantitative analysis of the 2005 North American installed base for the variable-data-capable digital presses with print speeds of at least 50 pages per minute for color and 91+ for monochrome.
In addition to a number of case studies, the study will also provide forecasts for 2006 as well as 2011, broken out in numerous ways, including black and white versus color, speed and type of technology (electrophotography, magnetography and inkjet).
The study will also:
• Provide a forecast of the migration from offset to digital.
• Provide an understanding of equipment replacement cycle time and possible markets for used digital equipment.
• Provide an understanding of the workflow and the impacts on future installed base for feeding and finishing process (including inline and offline in the physical workflow) and other areas such as web-to-print, JDF, UP31, hybrids (offset and digital), and software needs.
• Provide a quantitative contrast and comparison of substrate and other consumables usage patterns by technology, type of market segment and print product.
• Provide qualitative analysis in the adoption of digital printing, barriers and drivers for adoption, and trends that may influence the growth of digital printing.
When completed in the fall of 2006, Digital Printing Outlook in Production Environments will be be distributed exclusively to PRIMIR and NPES member.

TWGA Reports Printers Increasingly Look to Digital Work
According to a new report, Broadening Digital Printing Serves as a Sales Opportunity, from TrendWatch Graphic Arts (TWGA), printers are increasingly looking toward digital work.
In fall 2005, 36 percent of all print and prepress firms cited “broadening digital printing services” as a sales opportunity, up from 26 percent six months earlier – representing an all-time high for this opportunity.
According to TWGA, the printing industry has witnessed wholesale technology transitions before (letterpress to offset, for example) and while the jury may still be out as to whether we’re in the midst of another complete transition (this time from offset to digital), it seems clear that digital printing is taking an increasingly large slice of the print pie.
The driver is not necessarily the technology itself, but is rather a complex medley of cultural trends that is changing how media in general – and print in particular – are desired and delivered.
TrendWatch Graphic Arts publishes market trend and information reports, provides industry briefings and performs market/product strategy and market information consulting services.
The company’s main products are surveys of the printing, publishing, creative and web design and development markets, demographic atlas and market segmentation guides, and special market profile reports.
