As the RadTech UV+EB 2016 Technology Expo and Conference opens today for three days at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago, IL, there is strong interest in the latest technologies for ultraviolet (UV), UV LED and electron beam (EB) curing.
Energy curing is a growth area in a number of major segments, from printing and packaging to paints, coatings and adhesives, with significant interest in emerging markets such as 3D printing. At RadTech 2016, leading end users, suppliers and researchers will discuss their needs and showcase their newest innovations.
With speakers scheduled from large multinational companies including Ford Motor Company, Toyota, P&G, Pepsi Co. and more, RadTech 2016 should have plenty of insights for attendees.
Exhibitors say that growth in energy curing is occurring in a wide range of industries.
Rebecca Lonczak, marketing manager, Keyland Polymer Ltd., said that Keyland Polymer contunues to see growth in a variety of markets.
“We are seeing growth and a lot of interest, particularly in metal industrial product applications such as wire, filters, sprinklers and other components,” Lonczak noted.
Stacy Hoge, marketing manager for Phoseon Technology, said that UV LED is a particularly promising field.
“Phoseon is very pleased to see the growth specifically related to UV LED curing technology,” Hoge reported. “There will be over 30 presentations this year specifically to UV LED, and Phoseon will be presenting at three of them.”
Morning Sessions
Today’s morning sessions feature presentations on 3D Printing, Formulation, Specialty Applications and Hardcoats.
Technical Conference Track A will open with 3D Printing, featuring talks by Ahmet Nebioglu of Dymax Oligomers & Coatings, Zak Eckel of HRL Labs, LLC, William Wolf of Sartomer and Bob Ruckle of Siltech Corp.
After 3D Printing, Track A heads to Specialty Applications. These will include talks by Changjin Lee, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology; Emily B. Henry, Lipscomb University; Dr. Vincent Luo, China General Nuclear; and Evan Baker and Henry Ware, Northwestern University.
A session on Formulation opens Track B of the Technical Conference. Neil Cramer of CPS, Matt Terwillegar of Myriant and Sara Kaalberg of University of Iowa will cover this segment. Next up is Hardcoats, also featuring three presenters: Marcus Hutchins of Allnex, Jennifer David of Momentive Performance Materials and Qiang Hu.
Aside from the Technical Conference tracks, there will also be Special Sessions. This morning will feature two Special Sessions. Track C, Advanced Technology for UV Wood Applications, will be covered by presentations from Mike Higgins of Phoseon and Roy Pagan of Cefla North America – Finishing Division.
Special Sessions Track D, UV/EB Curing for Automotive Applications, will offer insights from Chris Seubert of Ford Motor Company and Cynthia Templeman of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America.

Track C features two Panel Discussions. First up is Latest Advancements in 3D Printing Using UV Technologies, including Victor Latour of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, Sumeet Jain of Arkema Inc., Sartomer Business Unit, Lance Pickens of MadeSolid, Mike Idacavage of Colorado Photopolymer Solutions; Brian Adzima of Autodesk and Alex Mejiritski of Spectra Group Limited.
The second Panel Discussion will look at Material Innovation: A Discussion with Consumer Product Companies. This will feature Dr. Sharon Tracy of Steelcase Inc.; Alrick Warner of P&G; Christopher Seubert of Ford Motor Company; Todd Fayne of Pepsi Co.; and 3M’s Robin Wright of 3M.
Special Session Track D will offer presentations on UV Hydrogel Medical, Industrial, and Developing Applications. The speakers will include Beth Rundlett of Katcheco; Robin Wright of 3M and Allan Guymon of University of Iowa and Christiane Nguyen of University of Connecticut.
