Job Description:
Under minimal supervision and direction, the Senior Chemist is responsible for developing Liquid Inks Technology solutions to a wide range of problems in primary and related disciplines. The packaging market solutions are practical, cost-effective, thorough and creative. The inks may be solvent based, aqueous and/ or energy curable. The successful candidate will be capable of handling multiple projects in parallel with variable development timelines depending on the nature of the project and customer expectations. The candidate is expected to lead/execute his/her projects using a Global Project Management (GPM*) process from ideation to a successful commercial launch. Proven experience in liquid inks formulations development and testing is required as well as a good understanding of the chemistry, structure-properties relationships, raw materials, cost and product performance requirements. The candidate will be expected to use his/her creativity in the product development st rategy and help secure the IP related to the work while maintaining an active watch on competitive activities in the field. Provides technical assistance to internal customers and stakeholders.
Functions/Responsibilities:
• Lead Liquid Ink R&D projects and timely execute technical work assignments, experimentation and methodologies.
• May train others as required.
• Ensure consideration of economics and environmental, health and safety implications.
• Identify and understand the intellectual property for the developed technology including how it fits with regard to competitive IP landscape.
• Demonstrate professional expertise in liquid inks formulation and sharing knowledge through coaching, technical reports, team presentations, published articles and/or conference papers.
• Bring forward new ideas for growth, profitability and productivity and showing innovation skills.
• Work both independently and effectively in collaboration with global technical, marketing and sales partners involved in the projects.
• Exhibit strong track record of innovation, product development and commercialization including the introduction of key technologies to meet market & customer requirements.
• Displays strong problem solving skills with the ability to think strategically about complex problems and anticipate future trends and needs.
• Provide hands on disposition with demonstrated lab skills related to ink formulations (solvent, water, energy curable).
• Comfortable working across development and application laboratories, process engineering and at customer’s facilities.
• Achieve SMART goals oriented results and demonstrated ability to drive projects to completion and interact effectively.
• Monitors trials and pilot plant runs. May attend field trials and provide technical assistance.
• Utilize ISO, Six Sigma, DfSS, DoE and other continuous improvement processes.
• Record experimentation records in lab notebook, GPM* and ISO repositories and serves as ISO Coordinator for Carlstadt Liquid Inks department.
• May participate in establishing capital budgets.
• Ensure laboratory equipment, general housekeeping, hazard material analysis compliance and safety standard compliance are maintained.
• Proven applied and theoretical knowledge in printable coatings including materials, formulations, and application testing.
• Experience with coating deposition processes.
• Strong project management skills.
• Proven ability to deliver results in time.
• Demonstrated understanding of chemistry and structure/property relationship in coatings.
