Dr. Peter A. Lewis passed away. He had previously served as Sun Chemical’s coatings industry manager, handling marketing functions for pigments in the paint and coatings marketplace.
Dr. Lewis joined Sun Chemical in 1980 as product manager for quinacridone pigments. Prior to being promoted to coatings industry manager in 1989, he served as technical service manager and dry color product manager. He was named director of communications and environmental affairs in September 2000.
Dr. Lewis had been published in many trade magazines and scholarly journals, including the FSCT (Federation of Societies of Coating Technology) Monograph series. An updated version of his 1990 monograph, “Organic Pigments,” was published in 1995. Dr. Lewis has also served as editor for the second edition of the “Pigment Handbook,” published in 1988. He was a longtime instructor at the summer course for the National Printing Ink Research Institute (NPIRI).
A native of Blackpool, Lancashire, U.K., Dr. Lewis was a graduate of London’s Royal Institute of Chemistry and received his Ph.D. in colloid chemistry from Bristol University, U.K.
“The Colors Group of Sun Chemical will miss him dearly: his knowledge, his creativity, and his commitment to the company,” said Peter Ludwig, Colors Group’s executive vice president
“We’ve lost an icon and a wonderful human being,” added Richard Incontro, National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers’ technical coordinator, who worked with Dr. Lewis on the NPIRI courses.
