Jim Felsberg, field marketing manager for Sun Chemical Corporation, has had a first-hand look at the growth of the packaging industry.
“The major highlights of my career center around the diversity of roles that I have enjoyed at Sun Chemical,” Felsberg said. “I have been proud to be part of the technical team and the growth of the packaging business at Sun Chemical. The technical growth and maturation of the packaging business and moving to the business support role have been very rewarding.
“I’d say the biggest highlight in my career has been meeting the wide range of people in the packaging industry, and especially the talented people within Sun Chemical,” he added. “I have met incredibly dedicated people from all over the globe that have wonderful insight on both business and technical topics.”
Felsberg joined Sun Chemical’s R&D facility in Carlstadt, NJ in 1987 as a junior chemist, and worked with the news ink group to develop water-based inks for the publication market. In 1993, he moved to Charlotte, NC and joined the packaging team. Throughout the years, Felsberg has held a variety of technical and management positions at Sun Chemical, including lab supervisor, technology manager and director of technical applications. In his current position, he manages all aspects of new product launches for liquid ink.
Felsberg has made significant technical and business contributions to the printing ink industry during his 30-year career, most notably contributions in printing ink formulation, manufacturing and application. He holds several patents, and developed a multi-color process for print and inks for high-speed flexographic printing.
In addition, Felsberg is highly regarded for sharing his knowledge of the industry with colleagues and peers. He participates in many panels on solvent-based inks and flexo printing, is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows and events, and has written several technical articles on high speed printing in industry trade publications. He has worked with Clemson University to recruit full-time and intern students to support Clemson’s Graphics Communications Program.
Felsberg noted that Tony Renzi, VP, product management, Sun Chemical Corporation, has been among his influences at Sun Chemical.
“There are many key influences in my professional career,” Felsberg said. “I have been lucky in my career to have consistent support from my management team, specifically Tony Renzi. Tony has been key in providing calm guidance and direction to help me navigate through my career.”
“Jim has made significant contributions to the printing ink industry during his long career,” Renzi said. “He has been an asset to Sun Chemical over the years and is dedicated to the advancement of the ink industry. For these reasons, Jim is deserving of this award and it has been a pleasure working with him.”
Outside of work, Felsberg enjoys spending time with family and friends while enjoying the beautiful weather in the Carolinas.
Felsberg said that he is honored that he was chosen to receive the Pioneer Award.
“I am honored to receive the Pioneer Award,” he concluded “This award continues to motivate me to help Sun Chemical and the industry improve technology as I continue on with my career.”
