Crown Holdings, Inc. announced that it will build a new beverage can plant in Monterrey, Mexico to meet growing demand. Monterrey, the capital of the northeastern state of Nuevo Leon, is Mexico’s third largest metropolitan area with a population of more than four million and serves as the commercial center for the north of the country.
The new plant will be constructed on land currently owned by EMPAQUE, which was included in the assets recently purchased by Crown, and will have the capability to produce two-piece aluminum cans in multiple sizes. The plant, which will be Crown’s fourth beverage can facility in Mexico, will have initial annual capacity of 2.0 billion cans and will be designed to accommodate further expansion.
Production of beverage cans is scheduled to commence in May 2016, with sales to contract customers in Monterrey and the surrounding region.
“In addition to completing the acquisition of EMPAQUE, the leading beverage can producer in Mexico, we are excited to further expand in this key strategic region of the country and meet our customers’ increasing demand,” Djalma Novaes, president of Crown’s Americas Division, said.
“Mexico is the world’s fourth largest per capita beer market and its second largest per capita soft drink market, and the new plant in Monterrey has been a key element of our strategic plan, “ Abel Coello Quintanilla, president of Crown Beverage Mexico, added. “The management of EMPAQUE is very pleased that Crown has endorsed our recommendation to proceed immediately with its construction.”
Following the acquisition of EMPAQUE, which was completed earlier today, Crown currently operates three beverage can plants, a food and aerosol can plant, a plant that manufactures beverage can ends, aluminum closures and bottle caps, a glass bottle plant and a glass service facility in Mexico.
