Sun Chemical Performance Pigments has announced a price increase on phthalocyanine pigments and pigment preparations. The amount of the increase is $0.40/lb on phthalocyanine blue and $0.25/lb on phthalo green dry colors. Price increases on preparations are proportional to the amount of pigment in each preparation.
The increases are fueled by the cost of raw materials that are used in the manufacture of the pigments. Over the last several months, the prices of both copper metal and phthalic anhydride have escalated dramatically on a global basis. Copper prices are 60 percent higher than they were at the end of 2005 and phthalic anhydride prices have risen 20 percent in the same time frame. Both of these materials are major building blocks for making phthalocyanine blues and greens, thus driving the cost to produce CI Pigment Blue 15’s and CI Pigment Green 7’s up significantly.
