Engelhard Corporation announced that it has formed an alliance with Nippon Sheet Glass to develop and market new special-effect pigments for makers of coatings, plastics, inks and cosmetics. The two companies are developing new metal-oxide-coating technologies based on a unique substrate that will enable a range of striking appearance characteristics not seen before in consumer products, according to the company. The alliance also will extend each company’s market reach around the world and accelerate the speed of innovation.
“This alliance will enable Engelhard to bring our customers unique effects that will lend market appeal to their products,” said Stephen D. Lux, Engelhard’s group vice president and general manager, appearance and performance technologies.
The first new products to be produced under the alliance will be a line of cosmetic effect pigments to be marketed by Engelhard as Reflecks Dimensions pigments.
The Reflecks line takes effect-enhancing pigments to new levels of chroma, color purity, brightness, transparency and reflectivity, according to the company. Reflecks Dimensions will offer customers a wide array of sought-after effects ranging from luminous to glittering. Engelhard expects to launch these products in the first quarter of 2003.
Engelhard also announced that it is raising prices for kaolin-based pigments and extenders for paint and coatings, inks, plastics and other industrial markets by 4 percent to 9 percent, dependent on grade and contract expiration specifics, effective March 1, 2003.
“Despite achieving significant productivity gains, our costs, especially those associated with energy, insurance and labor, have continued to rise over the last two years,” said Mr. Lux. “We need to recover at least a portion of these costs in order to continue providing our customers with the high-quality products and services they rely on and expect from Engelhard.”
